Besides good places to eat, Lauda will also impress you with a historic old town. The many half-timbered houses contribute just as much to the medieval townscape as the remains of the old city wall, which can still be seen here and there. You can learn more about the history of the town in the local heritage museum, which dedicates part of its exhibition to the regional wine growing. The route continues to Gerlachsheim, where the imposing church towers already greet you from afar. Past the Buchler house and the Buchler wine trading palace, it leads to the monastery complex of the Premonstratensian order and the Holy Cross monastery church, which impresses with many historic details. The magnificent ceiling paintings as well as altars and statues of saints make it one of the most important and beautiful baroque churches in the Tauber valley. The artistic baroque bridge with the figures of Saint Kilian, Burkhard, Nepomuk and the Archangel Michael leads over the Grünbach further to Grünsfield.
Along the way, the chapels of St. Achatius in Grünsfield-Hausen and St. Sigismund in Oberwittighausen tell the incredible hammer throw legend, according to which a giant is said to be responsible for the artistic construction of the two architecturally impressive sacred buildings: every time he finished a building, according to the legend, he threw away his hammer. Wherever it landed, the giant then built the next chapel. There used to be three of these octagonal houses of worship in total. The third – the Michael’s chapel in Gaurettersheim – has unfortunately since fallen into ruin.
