In Würzburg, the towering Marienberg Fortress is hard to overlook. You can either challenge the mountain of the same name and explore the fortress up close or simply enjoy, like many others, the picturesque view of it – for example from the old Main Bridge. If you are already at the Main, it is of course worthwhile to take a small round trip along its bank – perhaps as far as the Old Crane to stop there and then return through the scenic Würzburg old town, where the impressive Marien Chapel stands – the one which convinces by absolute understatement with regard to its name.

Directions
This demanding day route leads in an extensive loop from Tauberbischofsheim to Würzburg right into the heart of the Franconian wine region and back again. If the entire route is too far for you, you can also shorten part of it by train via Lauda. Alternatively, it makes sense to do a two-day route and spend the night in Würzburg.
From Tauberbischofsheim, the route initially goes steeply up to Hammerberg. Once reached, the route profile remains quite jagged and leads over fields and through forests to Würzburg, down into the Main valley. On the way back, there are also two decent climbs, then the profile calms down again somewhat and the route partly follows the Romantic Road and passes through the Welzbach Valley back to the starting point in Tauberbischofsheim.
