The vaulted chapel is the oldest part of the church. The church walls of this chapel survived the war. On the outer wall are three sculptures that were badly damaged. They represent the Three holy kings - survivors of the Second War.
The Catholic church was dedicated to the patron saint Michael. When the church was rebuilt into a pillared basilica in the 13th century, it also got a new name - Kilian's Church. In 1528 the Reformation was finally introduced in Heilbronn.
On December 4, 1944, the church was almost completely destroyed in an Allied air raid. After 30 years of reconstruction, which was made possible by the generous donations and foundations of the citizens of Heilbronn, the Kilian's Church today shines in new splendor.
The high altar of the Kilian Church is carved from pure lime wood. However, it is not quite the original altar from 1498. The figures of the altar were hidden in a salt works during the war and were thus able to survive, but the altar structure burned. After the war, this was re-carved by Josef Wolfsteiner, so that the altar could be re-installed with the original figures.
