This stage takes you from Würzburg to Gemünden (approx. 44 km)

Inclines: none on this route

Starting point: Würzburg, Alte Mainbrücke

Distances:

Würzburg – Zellingen (17.7 km)

Zellingen – Karlstadt (10.6 km)

Karlstadt – Gemünden (15.1 km)

Downstream on the left side of the Main, you leave the cathedral city Würzburg and cycle on the Main bike path towards Zell. Note the "Kloster Oberzell". Under the railway bridge, you reach Margetshöchheim and shortly after the wine town Erlabrunn. The leisure and bathing lake invites you to relax. You pass the district boundary of Würzburg district and reach Main-Spessart district. The wine town Zellingen is made famous by the vineyard "Retzbacher Benediktusberg" as well as the pilgrimage church "Maria im grünen Tal". After a short ride, you reach the wine town Himmelstadt (vineyard "Himmelstadter Kelter") with its renovated parish church St. Jakobus. The beer garden right by the bike path invites you to stay. A special feature of Himmelstadt is that it lies on both sides of the Main. Then it goes on via Laudenbach to Karlstadt. Old town romance and village idyll – you will find them close together here. In the old town surrounded by walls, towers and gates (founded around 1200), you discover buildings and structures that have been preserved for more than seven centuries, such as the Romanesque-Gothic "small town cathedral" St. Andreas, the stepped gable town hall from 1422, or the artistic half-timbered facades of proud bourgeois houses.

Continuing your ride on the Main bike path, you reach the stage destination Gemünden via Wernfeld. Gemünden lies at the confluence of Sinn and Saale into the Main – hence the designation "three-river city". At the same time, Gemünden forms the gateway to Spessart and Rhön. Particularly worth seeing: the historic old town with the Scherenburg.

Alternative on the right bank of the Main: Würzburg to Zellingen via Veitshöchheim (21 km)

Bike path/marking: Signposts "M-T-F" Bike figure-eight

Inclines: none on this route

For art lovers, the route from Würzburg to Zellingen on the right bank of the Main is recommended. Just a few kilometers from Würzburg, the wine-growing community Veitshöchheim awaits you. Picturesquely situated on the Main, cozy restaurants and hotels invite you in narrow alleys. However, the heart of the community is the most beautiful Rococo garden in Europe, a jewel of horticultural art, where a variety of unique mystical figures surprise between hedges. The highlight is the Musenberg Parnass with its water features. There lies the charming little castle, summer residence of the Würzburg prince-bishops.

7 km after Veitshöchheim, you reach Thüngersheim, a significant wine town in Franconia. The picturesque flair of the small town surely contributes to the particularly good taste of the wine. Lovingly renovated half-timbering, fortified gatehouses, the tithe yard, remains of the old church fortress with its characteristic alleyways, the noteworthy parish church St. Michael and art-historically significant house Madonnas and picture stones are impressive witnesses of the cultural history of an early Franconian settlement. In Retzbach, you cross the Main and return to Zellingen on the Main bike path or the Main-Tauber-Franconian Bike Figure-Eight.
