An English garden phaeton (1761) in Schwetzingen
While on a trip to England in 1776, the horticultural director Nicolas de Pigage purchased a “garden phaeton” for the Schwetzingen palace garden. Its inventor, Ovenden, named this muscle-powered horseless garden carriage after the son of Helios, the sun god. It was not long now before the bicycle would be invented.
