The development of a separate sovereignty, essentially at the expense of Amorbach Abbey, found its visible expression at Wildenburg Castle.
After its sale to the Archbishopric of Mainz in 1271, the castle remained the official seat of the Mainz administration until its destruction in the Peasants' War in 1525.
In Goethe's famous “Götz von Berlichingen”, the castle is probably confused with the “Mildenburg”?
Today, the ruins of the castle complex bear witness to its former importance and position within the Staufer Empire.
Discover the stonemasons' marks and the inscriptions of the builders. Enjoy the tranquillity and idyll in the middle of the Odenwald.
