In the Tauber Valley wine region, three wine-growing regions (Baden, Franconia, Württemberg) can be experienced within 100 km along the river and on the heights.

Welcome to the Tauber Valley wine region!

The Tauber Valley wine region stretches from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Wertheim am Main.

The Tauber flows through this region in a north-westerly direction for almost 100 km and is a constant companion to the vineyards that line the river valley.

Wine villages

The towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Creglingen, Röttingen, Weikersheim, Bad Mergentheim, Lauda-Königshofen, Tauberbischofsheim and Wertheim are located on the banks of the Tauber, some of which are internationally renowned. The side valleys are also home to wine towns such as Külsheim and Königheim.

Wine knowledge

Around 1100 hectares of vineyards are cultivated by winegrowers and winegrowers in the Tauber Valley. Around 65 percent is planted with white wine varieties and 35 percent with red wine varieties. The leading white wine varieties are Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner. However, Kernerrebe, Bacchus, Burgundy varieties, Auxerrois, Riesling, Ruländer, Scheurebe, Traminer and Gewürztraminer are also cultivated.

Among the red wines, Schwarzriesling has assumed the dominant role. Other varieties include Blauer Spätburgunder, Dornfelder, Regent, Acolon and, as a unique selling point, the indigenous Tauberschwarz variety.

Tauberschwarz as a unique selling point

For several centuries, the Tauberschwarz had been ignored; since the 1980s, it has experienced a remarkable renaissance and is now grown exclusively along the Tauber on an area of just 15 hectares. This makes it a veritable rarity.

Experience wine actively

As qualified wine connoisseurs of the Tauber Valley, trained wine guides will tell you lots of interesting facts about growing grapes in the vineyards and ageing them in the wine cellars. From wine tasting to a tour of the vineyard to a guided tour of the cellar and the inclusion of cultural sights, many things are possible.

The 204-kilometer Tauber Valley Wine Route makes it possible to experience the three wine-growing regions by car.

A glass of wine is the perfect way to round off the evening. The various wine festivals in the region and the broom taverns are also a great way to combine a glass of wine with an insight into the region and the way of life of the people.

We hope you enjoy experiencing the Tauber Valley wine region!
